FAQ - What is a 3G pitch?

A 3G pitch is surfaced with a type of artificial grass known as "third generation"

3G synthetic grass, is recognised by sports governing bodies as the most up to date surfacing product on the market.

3G grass is suitable for football, 5-a-side and indoor pitches and is made using either a fibrillating or monofilament yarn which is 'in filled' with kiln dried silica sand and granulated rubber, which provides a shock absorbing property.

3G surfacing is designed to replicate natural grass and it also allows users to wear boots with moulded studs.

Artificial grass pitches are usually constructed using an engineered base, which features a layer of tarmac on top of the stone base layer. However, 3G grass can be installed directly on to a dynamic (stone) base in order to reduce costs.

Depending on the available budget, some pitches will include a surface with a shorter pile which is laid on to a shock pad whilst others will have a longer pile and no shock pad. Both options create the same playing characteristics and achieve the necessary performance standards.

Some companies claim that there is now a more advanced product in the market, known as 4G artificial grass. This is essentially a longer pile grass like 3G but without the addition of rubber crumb infill.   Whilst 4G products do exist, it should be noted that 4G is not recognised as a new technology product and it is not approved by sports governing bodies.
