It may be the birthplace of the world famous game which takes its name, but they do play other sports too.
The World famous Rugby School, The UK’s leading co-educational boarding and day school, contacted Dura-Sport at the turn of the year to provide some help and advice with regards to their existing 8 lane non-turf cricket practice facility.
Despite regular maintenance the facility had come to the end of its lifespan and was showing significant signs of wear and tear.
Following a site visit, upon closer inspection the facility did not meet current ECB compliance and a repair and mend exercise was neither cost effective nor would achieve this. Therefore following advice and in order to offer best value the school opted to reconstruct the entire existing facility, in turn allowing for upgrades and enhancements during the process.
Firstly, the light duty steelwork had become damaged and corroded over the years so was removed and replaced in its entirety with a taller, longer structure formed from thicker heavy duty galvanised steel, housed in deeper cage sockets concreted into the ground. The original light duty net was also removed and replaced with our enhanced 3mm thick DS HD netting system.
With all worn synthetic components and existing timber lifted and removed, a new edge detail was installed to define the facility perimeter and new specialist foundation material was imported.
With new shock pad underlay installed within the area, over 750m2 of new surfacing was then required to cover the reconstructed foundation.
The School opted for two different types of Dura-Sport specialist synthetic material: firstly, our unique loam coloured Vision cricket carpets were installed within the batting end area of each lane, with DS Evograss tri-coloured natural looking synthetic grass material then installed within the extended run up area.
Both the foundation material, shock pad and surfacing options were specified to aim to provide a practice facility to replicate the look, feel and performance of a well prepared natural turf cricket pitch, with each batter protected from cross shots by the new cage structure and netting system.
The project was completed within the Schools’ budget and was first used by the students of Rugby School during the 2021 Spring Term.
