3G Synthetic Grass

The majority of surfacing used for football is known as 3G, or 3rd Generation synthetic grass and these are available in varying pile heights and fibre types. Depending upon the playing characteristics and performance standard required, these can either be laid on to a dynamic or engineered base, with or without a shock absorbing performance layer - or shock pad.

Dura-Sport has many years experience installing these types of artificial grass surfaces and can either construct a project in its entirety, supply and lay the chosen synthetic grass on to a prepared base or simply install a surface on your behalf.

Football facilities are usually built to one of the following standards:

•FIFA 2 Star - the highest accredited system
•FIFA 1 Star
•FA Community use

Each standard has a comprehensive criterea which must be strictly adhered to throughout the construction process.

Sand Filled Synthetic Grass

There are various types of sand filled synthetic sports surfaces available from numerous manufacturers throughout Europe. Pile heights and fibre types can vary from surface to surface and the ideal product will be dependent upon the types of sport and their order of importance.

Tufted surfaces are created using a pre-formed primary backing, which is pierced with hundreds of needles punching the yarn through the backing, creating a loop at the required pile height. This is then cut with a blade creating a tuft. Once this process has been completed a secondary latex backing is applied to reduce tuft. The grass is usually manufactured using either a polypropylene or polyethylene yarn. 

The grass is in-filled with kiln dried silica sand usually to within 1 – 2mm of the top of the pile of the grass at the rates specified by the manufacturer and this varies due to the pile height and face weight of the product.

Sand Dressed Synthetic Grass

A sand dressed synthetic grass is manufactured using the same method as above but as the title suggests, this synthetic grass is dressed, rather than filled with the sand. A sand dressed synthetic grass is usually more dense and therefore requires less sand.

Needle Punched Synthetic Grass

A needle punched product is manufactured by layering staple fibres. These are then needled to the correct density. The surface is then textured and impregnated with resin.

Needle punched synthetic grass can be manufactured in varying widths (usually 4 - 5 metres maximum) and is jointed and seamed on site by our own in-house skilled fitters using a hot melt seaming method which can provide a superior bond.

Playing lines are usually cut in to the playing surface on site using a similar surface material in a contrasting colour or can be painted directly on to the surface. Cut-in lines are a permanent solution and will last the life of the surface.

Needle punched synthetic grass is in-filled with kiln dried silica sand. The quantity of sand is stipulated by the manufacturer but will usually be dependant upon pile height, and density of the product. The sand is applied using specialist spreading equipment and techniques ensuring even distribution.

Needle punched surfaces generally require less sand infill than sand filled surfaces and therefore require less maintenance.
